How to spend four days in Reykjavik without renting a car

A city-based four-day plan using walking, public buses, one carefully chosen excursion, and a flexible weather day.

The short answer

Stay within walking distance of central Reykjavik or a frequent bus route, use the city on foot for two days, and choose one organised day trip for the landscape you care about most. Keep the fourth day flexible for weather. Route 55 is the public bus connection to Keflavik Airport, but its stop pattern and timetable must be checked for your arrival.

Choose a base that removes daily transport

A central stay costs more on some dates, but it can remove repeated transfers and make weather changes easier to absorb. Compare the final price of a central room with a cheaper room plus the time and cost of daily transport.

If you stay outside the centre, map the exact bus stop and evening service before booking. A neighbourhood description is not enough.

Day one: learn the city on foot

Keep arrival day deliberately small: the harbour, central streets, one museum or gallery, and a public pool. Reykjavik is compact enough that a walkable first day gives you a useful mental map without committing to outdoor conditions far from the city.

Use a city bus for one longer link if needed. Visit Reykjavik describes public transport as the most affordable local option and notes that the network reaches the greater capital area.

Day two: choose one landscape, not every headline stop

Choose a single organised excursion based on your real priority: geothermal landscapes, the south coast, or another route that operates for your dates. Compare the operator's cancellation terms, pickup point, total duration, and weather policy before paying.

A no-car trip works best when one long day does the geographic work and the remaining days stay close to Reykjavik.

Day three: use the bus and the neighbourhoods

Payment

Transfers

A single ticket has a timed transfer window; confirm the current rule in the official ticketing information.

Day four: protect the plan from weather

Do not assign the final day to a non-refundable outdoor activity before seeing the forecast and operator advice. Keep a city route, pool, museum, or food-focused day ready, then move the outdoor activity into the best available weather window.

For the airport, check Route 55 and private coach options separately. Route 55 does not serve every Reykjavik stop on every journey, so confirm the terminal stop, change, fare, and travel time for your exact flight.

A no-car plan is not a promise that every rural sight is reachable. It is a way to enjoy a short trip without taking on driving risk or parking logistics.
